Best Practices for Laying Out an eBook That People Finish

Published October 2026 · ramza.shop

Most readers abandon an eBook within the first few pages. Layout is a big reason: dense text, tiny type and unclear structure make reading feel like work. These practices help readers stay with your book.

Pick a readable size and line length

For PDF eBooks, body text between 10 and 12 points works well on screens when the page is A5 or similar. Keep lines at roughly 50 to 75 characters. Shorter lines tire the eye with constant jumping; longer lines make it hard to find the next line.

Give text room

Line spacing of about 1.4 to 1.6 times the font size and generous margins make a page feel calm. White space is not wasted space, it is how readers rest between ideas.

Use a clear heading hierarchy

Use no more than three heading levels. Make chapter titles obviously larger than section titles, and keep spacing above a heading larger than below it so each heading visually belongs to the text that follows.

Choose fonts carefully

Use one font family for body text and at most one more for headings. Serif fonts suit long reading in print-style layouts; clean sans-serif fonts work well for guides, cheat sheets and technical books. Embed the fonts in your PDF so layouts do not change on other devices.

Make navigation easy

Add a clickable table of contents and PDF bookmarks. Readers of guides jump around, and being able to reach a chapter in one tap is a real quality feature.

Use images with a purpose

Compress images so the file stays small enough to download on a mobile connection, and always add captions that explain why the picture matters. Avoid placing text over busy images.

Test on a phone

Many people read on phones. Open your PDF on one before publishing: can you read the body text without zooming, and do tables fit the screen? If not, simplify the layout.

End with a next step

Finish with a short summary and a clear next action, such as a checklist, a template or a link to a related resource. Readers who finish a book are far more likely to apply it.
