10 Figma Habits That Make Designing Faster
Published October 2026 · ramza.shop
Speed in Figma is rarely about shortcuts alone. It comes from setting up files so you do less repeated work. These ten habits make a visible difference.
1. Name things as you go
Rename frames and key layers while you work. A file with clear names is faster to navigate and far easier to hand over to a developer.
2. Use auto layout everywhere
Buttons, cards, lists and menus should all use auto layout. Content changes then resize elements by themselves instead of needing manual nudging.
3. Build components early
As soon as you draw something twice, turn it into a component. Updating the main component updates every copy.
4. Use variants for states
Group hover, pressed, disabled and error versions into a single component with variant properties.
5. Set up styles and variables
Define colours, text styles and spacing once. Changing the brand colour should be a one-step edit.
6. Learn a few shortcuts
Ctrl/Cmd + D duplicates, Shift + A adds auto layout, Ctrl/Cmd + Alt + K creates a component and Ctrl/Cmd + / opens quick actions. Search the menu for anything else.
7. Use a grid
A 4 or 8 point spacing system keeps layouts tidy and removes guesswork about margins.
8. Keep pages organised
Separate pages for exploration, final designs and components. Move finished work out of the sandbox so teammates know what is current.
9. Prototype only what you need
Link the main flow and skip decorative animations until the layout is approved.
10. Use community resources wisely
Free kits and icon sets save time, but check the licence and clean up unused layers before importing them into a client file.
Adopt one or two habits per project and they will soon become automatic.
